Healthy Hair Over 40: Expert Tips for Glossy, Vibrant Hair

Let’s talk getting healthy hair over 40. As we age, our hair naturally changes—it’s just part of the process. Hormonal shifts, years of styling, and lifestyle factors can leave hair feeling drier, more brittle, or less vibrant. At 45, I’ve started noticing these changes myself. My hair looks… different. Not bad, just not the same. It’s a little thinner, and I can’t help but wonder if years of tightly pulling it back have impacted my hairline.

I’ve been using many of these tips for years and credit them with keeping my hair glossy and healthy despite the inevitable effects of aging and some over-processing along the way. But now, I’m stepping up my game and doing everything I can to maintain and improve its condition.

Here’s the good news: while these changes are common, achieving healthy, shiny hair in your 40s (and beyond) is absolutely possible. I’ve done the research for us, and with a few simple tweaks to your routine and the right care, you can keep your hair looking and feeling vibrant.

How to Get Shiny, Healthy Hair Over 40

How to Get Healthy Hair Over 40

1. Prioritize Scalp Care for Stronger Hair

Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. As we age, our scalp produces less oil, which can lead to dryness. Combat this with these strategies:

Spend any time online, and you’ll find conflicting opinions about sulfates—some claim they’re perfectly fine, while others insist they’re the worst thing you could use on your hair. It can be frustrating how often things are demonized, but the truth is, it really depends on your hair type and needs.

For many women over 40, sulfates can strip away natural oils, leaving hair dry, dull, and prone to frizz. If that sounds like your experience, switching to a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo might help cleanse your hair without compromising its moisture and shine.

3. Deep Condition Weekly for Shine and Hydration

Replenish hydration and restore shine with weekly deep conditioning treatments. Look for masks containing:

  • Keratin: For strength and repair
  • Shea Butter: For deep hydration
  • Jojoba or Avocado Oil: For added shine

4. Regular Trims Keep Hair Looking Healthy

Trim your hair every 6–8 weeks to keep split ends in check and prevent them from traveling up the shaft, causing more damage. Regular trims help maintain healthy, strong hair.

5. Protect Your Hair from Heat Damage

Heat styling can weaken hair over time. Protect it by:

  • Using a Heat Protectant: Always apply a heat protectant before styling.
  • Lowering Heat Settings: Use the lowest effective temperature on styling tools.
  • Air-Drying When Possible: Give your hair a break from heat.

7. Hair Growth Tips for Women Over 40

Your diet plays a significant role in hair health. Incorporate:

  • Protein: Found in lean meats, eggs, and beans, I add Vital
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: From salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Biotin, zinc, and iron

Product Recommendation: Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails Gummies

8. Protect Against Environmental Damage

UV rays and pollution can harm your hair. Protect it by:

9. Professional Hair Treatments to Consider

For extra TLC, consider treatments like keratin smoothing or glossing. Talk to a stylist about the best options for your hair type.

  • Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle wet hair.
  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and breakage.
  • Consider a silk bonnet for added protection.
Product Recommendation: You can find these at various price points to suit any need. It might take trying a few different options to find the perfect fit. My middle daughter has very curly hair and started wearing a bonnet last year. She uses this one and says it’s made a huge difference in her hair, making her morning routine so much easier. Funny enough, she was on FaceTime with a few of her friends the other night, and they were all wearing one!

This is such a great post. However, the link to the Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements did not work. I did order it but I don't think you will get a commission on it. :(

Oh gosh. Changes in hair. I am 68 and have been losing hair for that last couple of years. Probably lack of estrogen. But you are so right about the basic texture changes through the years. I now have wavy hair and it was straight before. One change that I have instituted is a good brushing every day with a quality brush. I also use a homemade almond oil/rosemary oil concoction and I do see new baby hairs at the hairline. Unfortunately, Nutrafol cannot be taken if one is taking blood thinners. Readers should double-check before adding an oral supplement for hair loss.

Great tips! I recently purchased a silk pillowcase from Quince and I can highly recommend it. The price is reasonable for real silk. I notice the difference in my hair in the morning, I have a lot less frizz.
