10 Ways to Have Great Style on a Budget

At The Well Dressed Life, we focus on helping readers find classic style on a budget with a mix of budget-friendly fashion finds that feel easy and timeless. Whether you’re looking for tips to embrace your unique style or outfit inspiration that won’t break the bank, achieving great style is about more than shopping sales.

It’s about understanding how to put pieces together and making the most of what’s already in your closet.

If we were having a casual chat over coffee, here’s what I’d tell you to do to prioritize great style on a budget:

How to Have Great Style on a Budget

1. Stop Wearing Old Crap

Perhaps the best piece of advice I can offer to help you create a chic, modern style on a budget is to let go of your old stuff.

Whenever I mention this, I inevitably get flooded with messages about that one amazing garment someone’s been wearing for 20 or 30 years.

And yes—fair enough—there are a few timeless pieces with real staying power. But those are the exception, not the rule, and they’re typically high-quality investments like a Burberry trench or a Chanel jacket, designed to endure and crafted with premium quality and unique style in mind.

Having spent a decade as a personal stylist for women with everyday budgets, I’ve stood in thousands of closets, and I see the same patterns again and again. Too many of us hold on to items that don’t serve us anymore. Here’s what I noticed most:

  • Surprisingly, clients often kept stained or damaged items, thinking they could just “layer something over it.”
  • Many would squeeze into clothes that no longer fit comfortably, hesitant to go up a size.
  • But the most common issue, and the main reason I was called in, was that they didn’t notice when items had become dated.

Letting go of what doesn’t work anymore is key to a fresh, affordable, and stylish wardrobe.

2. For Great Style on a Budget Remove Your Dated Pieces

Styles and fashions evolve constantly. The best way to avoid wearing outdated pieces is to clear out the dated items hanging in your closet.

Think about it—it’s easy to throw an ’80s costume party because the farther we get from a decade, the more specific and recognizable those looks become. And while we’re seeing ’90s trends come back around, they’re being reinterpreted, not revived exactly as they were.

So, take a fresh look at your closet and give it a thorough edit. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to create a current, budget-friendly style without the clutter of the past holding you back.

3. Organize Your Closet

And the best way to purge your dated pieces is the give your wardrobe and closet an edit.

Knowing what you own is essential for smart shopping. Take some time to organize your closet, so you’re not tempted to buy similar items or miss out on pieces that would complete an outfit.

4. Define Your Personal Style

If you want enviable style on a budget, knowing what you like—and what you don’t—will save you time, money, and help you make smarter shopping choices without breaking the bank.

Our preferences and needs evolve over time, but when it comes to clothing, we often stay stuck in a style rut. The key to maximizing your budget is to create a framework for your personal style.

When I worked with new clients, I’d have them create style inspiration boards. Originally, we’d clip images from magazines, but as Pinterest took off, we moved online. (You can explore my Pinterest boards here.)

Having a visual of what you love is the most efficient way to stay budget-friendly because it gives you a structure to filter your choices. Once you’re clear on your style, you’ll start spotting what you like everywhere.

5. Think in Terms of Total Budget Rather than Pieces

When building a great style on a budget, it’s essential to think in terms of your total budget rather than focusing on each individual item. Allocating a set budget upfront gives you a clearer picture of how much you have to work with, helping you prioritize spending in a way that maximizes value.

For example, if you have $500 to refresh your wardrobe, consider how that amount can be divided strategically across essentials—like spending more on a quality pair of jeans or a versatile blazer while saving on trendier items or accessories. This approach prevents overspending on a single item and gives you room to create a cohesive, wearable wardrobe.

6. Keep Your Nails Polished with this Hack

How to give yourself a salon manicure at home

There’s no doubt that polished nails elevate your look in a big way, but you’ll find that weekly manicures add up and are total time killers. While I try to get a manicure every couple of weeks, I can’t always sneak out for one (especially these days).

When I am out of time, I do it myself using this quick hack, and my nails look like I just walked out of the salon. You can see my step-by-step guide here.

7. Match Your Hardware

“Hardware” is anything extra on an item, like a belt or shoe buckle, buttons, zippers, chains on a bag; you get the idea. By coordinating your metal color, you create a cohesive look. It’s subtle but has a significant impact.

This means that if you are wearing a navy blazer with gold buttons, don’t wear a shoe with a silver buckle. Instead, wear one with gold, or skip altogether.

Along with keeping your hardware the same, be careful not to wear too much. Hardware will weigh down your look, and it doesn’t look sophisticated when there is too much.

Also, be careful of pairing heavy hardware with busy patterns.

8. Work with Neutrals, Texture, and Basics

For a high style look within a budget, focus your resources on basics, neutrals and pieces with texture, (like the nubby jacket above paired with jeans).

You’ll get more use out of your pieces, but you’ll also look more pulled together. When neutrals are paired together, they create a richness to your look, regardless of how much you spent.

Neutrals are more than just white, tan, brown, and black. Navy, gray, and burgundy also give the same effect.

Patterns can be neutral too. Animal prints, pinstripes, and even textures like tweed (like above) count. Incorporating these and pairing them together will elevate your look in a big way.

If you want to include patterns in your wardrobe, look for more sophisticated prints that feel like a neutral and wear them with modern basics.

9. Don’t Mix Patterns

Contrary to what most fashion blogs will tell you, mixing pattern takes a great deal of technique and an understanding of color theory, balance, and composition. If you do it haphazardly, you will look like a hot mess.

Instead, pick a sophisticated on and ground it with better basics.

See outfit details here.

10. Avoid Clearance Impulse Purchases

No kidding, right?

But here’s the thing.

When I worked with clients in their closets, I noticed they were burning money in specific categories.

For example, discounted shoes from places like DSW or Off Fifth.

I would look at shelves full of marked-down boxes filled with barely or never worn shoes. And my first thought was always, for what was spent, you could have a couple of beautiful, well-made shoes instead.

Don’t get me wrong; I share weekly sales, so you know I love a discount.

You just need to remember only to buy things that work in your wardrobe, will make more outfits (at least 2 -3), and fit your style profile.

Style on A Budget Recap

This is a lot of information! Let’s break it down:

  1. Create a chic, modern style on a budget by letting go of old stuff that doesn’t serve you.
  2. Purge your closet of dated, and damage items to make room for updated classic.
  3. Keep your space organized so you can see what you have easily, and not make unnecessary purchases.
  4. Clearly define your personal style so it’s easier to shop and to create outfits that best reflect you.
  5. Grooming is high impact and can be low cost. Have your nails manicured with our simple hack is an easy way to look polished on a budget.
  6. think in terms of your total budget rather than focusing on each individual item.
  7. Create a cohesive look by matching your hardwares. Keep gold with gold, silver with silver. It makes a huge difference.
  8. Work with neutrals, textures, and better basics. Divide your resources so you are investing in workhorse pieces. These allow you to then layer in less expensive and/or trend focused pieces.
  9. Avoid patterns. Most patterns lack sophistication and look cheap – even if they aren’t. Also, skip mixing and matching patterns unless you are really good at it.
  10. Manage clearance rack shopping. Do it, but make sure it something you actually need.

This was the best article- full of substance. I am so guilty of # 1. You look great in all the photos and the comment about the shoes really hit. Doing my nails right now.

I loved the suggestions, but what if you absolutely, positively cannot wear heels, due to chronic back/feet conditions?!? I have been using well-made sandals and "sketchers", but cannot wear heels at this point in my life. Also, I have very wide feet at the toes, and a very narrow heel. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated

This is such good information - and so hard to do! I especially have trouble resisting a sale. I think part of my problem is that when I see an item that I THINK will make a good addition to my wardrobe, I don't know for sure until I try it out with different looks, and see how it fits and feels when worn for a day. I just can't always tell in the dressing room whether it's a winner or "just okay." But with your tips, I am getting better! Defining my personal style has really helped.

The “dated” part is my biggest issue - but how do I KNOW if something is dated? I read this post and it was helpful but any other tips? Thank you!

This was a great reminder of how we can look older and dated. I don’t like to follow trends, since that has no sustainability but it’s important to have a fresh wardrobe too. Fantastic tips! Thank you!

Thank you for this. It really resonated with me because I tend to hold on to different outdated pieces but I don’t wear them instead I tell myself what if I need them sometime? It’s ridiculous and I have slowly started to donate those clothing items. Now that I am retired I I’m attempting to refine my causal looks and purchase accordingly while also having some great more dressy looks as well. Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

I would also say, embrace the season you’re in too whether that’s a new momma who’s body is not quite what it used to be or someone like me who’s semi-retired and doesn’t need to dress up everyday but doesn’t want to live in pajamas!!

I love the way you spell it out.

And fully agree I just gave 4-5 bags of clothes and shoes away.

Great advice. I used to be guilty of hanging onto clothes that were dated. I spent a lot of money on my clothes and convinced myself they were still in style because they were classics. When I did your wardrobe challenge the first time, I finally donated a lot of those clothes. I also stopped buying things because they were a ‘good deal’.

So helpful, thanks for posting. I feel like I'm stuck on not knowing what in my closet looks dated - I need the reminder to get rid of old stuff because I won't even realize something is 10 + years old! I just keep wearing it because I love it, and I'm not great (yet) at creating a good look, so I find it hard to change items. I really appreciate your blog for this reason, its helping me build a fashion foundation so I can make good intentional choices, not come across pieces or combinations that work mysteriously and gang on to them forever. 🤣

Very interesting post. Some of my clothing goes back more than 40 years. And yes, they still fit me. I keep some of them around so I can remodel them as styles change, since I am very good with alterations and remakes. I also remodel yard sale finds or maybe just use their fabric for other purposes. After all, the zippers alone are probably worth more than the yard sale price.

Megan, when I saw the Pin that said "Including: Stop Wearing Your Old Crap," I had to check it out! Now I happen to have lots of "old" pieces that aren't "crap" (well made classics in beautiful fabrics in great condition), but I also have a bunch of tops that have turned to "crap" that I hang onto thinking "I'll wear this while I'm cooking (or gardening or doing housework)." But I think you're right--it's time for them to go!

Megan Kristel

Wednesday 23rd of January 2019

Yes! Not everything that's old is "crap." Sounds like you made some good decisions with timeless investment pieces. Also, I'm all for hanging on to things if you work in the garden, or paint - it's really the old pieces that are dated, worn, and/or stained that we try to still use in an outfit. Those we can let go of! :)

“if you’re wearing one bra almost every day, you shouldn’t expect it to last much longer than a month.” That is absurd! Who could possibly afford to replace their bras monthly besides maybe the Kardashians? Bras are expensive! If you buy a decent quality bra and take proper care of it, unless you experience major weight changes (like pregnancy) there is no reason a bra should not last several years. This notion that bras worn regularly need to be replaced every few months is a marketing ploy designed to sell more product.

Jennifer

What’s wrong with owning the same bra for 6 years? I have bras I’ve owned for 15 years or more. They’re not bras I wear every day but I even have some of those that I’ve had for probably 5 years or more. They’re perfectly fine.

Hi Megan, Thanks for reposting this! Do you recommend long necklaces with a larger bust? Appreciate your help!

Megan Kristel

Wednesday 8th of August 2018

Yes! Though it really depends on the neckline of your top. If you are wearing a higher neck, straight or boatneck style it can cut the line of your body in a very flattering way. Just watch that it is long enough, you don't want it to hang at an awkward spot.
