How to Shop Your Closet: A Step-by-Step Guide to Refresh Your Wardrobe

Shopping your closet can make getting dressed feel effortless, no matter the time of year. Whether you’re doing a no-spend or low-spend month, feeling uninspired by your wardrobe, or just looking to maximize what you already own, shopping your closet is the perfect solution. If any of these sound familiar, it’s the perfect time to shop your closet.

Shopping your closet is a budget-friendly way to refresh your style, rediscover hidden gems, and create new outfit combinations—all without spending a dime. Here’s how to make the process productive and enjoyable.

Shop your wardrobe tips

Step #1: Edit and Organize Your Closet for Maximum Wearability

Before you can effectively shop your closet, it needs to be well-organized. A cluttered, overstuffed wardrobe makes it difficult to see what you actually have.

  • Declutter First: Start by removing anything that doesn’t fit, is damaged beyond repair, or no longer suits your personal style.
  • Use the One-Year Rule: If you haven’t worn it in the past year and can’t see yourself styling it in multiple ways, let it go.
  • Group by Category: Organize your clothes by type—tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear—so everything is easily accessible.
  • Make a ‘Needs Fixing’ Pile: If an item is missing a button, needs hemming, or could use slight tailoring, put it in a separate pile and schedule time to address these fixes.

🛍 Pro Tip: Keep a rolling rack or a designated area in your closet to highlight seasonal pieces and outfit combinations as you go.

Step #2: Get Inspired and Plan Your Outfits

Now that your closet is edited and organized, it’s time to find outfit inspiration.

  • Create a Pinterest Board: Curate a style inspiration board on Pinterest to help define your aesthetic. Over time, you’ll notice recurring colors, silhouettes, and themes that align with your personal style.
  • Use Instagram & Fashion Blogs: Follow influencers and fashion experts with a style you admire. Screenshot outfits you love and save them in a dedicated album on your phone.
  • Identify Key Pieces: Look for staple items in your closet that resemble pieces in your inspiration board. You don’t need the exact items—similar colors, shapes, or layering techniques can work just as well.

👗 Pro Tip: Take it a step further by snapping photos of your outfits when you love what you’re wearing. Save them in a folder on your phone for quick reference.

Step #3: Build Stylish Outfits from Your Wardrobe

Now, let’s get creative! The goal is to mix and match your existing wardrobe in fresh ways.

  • Break Apart Your Go-To Looks: If you always wear a specific top with the same jeans, try pairing it with a skirt or different trousers.
  • Experiment with Accessories: Statement jewelry, scarves, belts, and bags can completely transform an outfit.
  • Layer Thoughtfully: A lightweight turtleneck under a button-down, a blazer over a hoodie, or a long cardigan over a dress can breathe new life into basics.
  • Swap Footwear: Change the entire vibe of an outfit just by switching sneakers for loafers or heels for boots.
  • Try Monochrome Dressing: Wearing different shades of the same color creates a sophisticated and intentional look.

🛍 Pro Tip: If you’re stuck, invite a friend over and style outfits together. A second opinion can help you see your wardrobe in a new light.

Quick Tips to Shop Your Closet Like a Pro

  • Purge as You Go: Keep a donation bin in your closet for items you no longer wear.
  • Mix Casual with Dressy: A blazer over a hoodie, sneakers with a slip dress—unexpected combinations can be stylish and effortless.
  • Alter Before Buying New: Simple fixes like tailoring pants or replacing buttons can make unworn pieces wearable again.
  • Stop Saving for ‘Special Occasions’: Wear your ‘nice’ pieces now—elevate a casual look with a structured bag or a silk scarf.
  • Use a Style App: Apps like Stylebook or Cladwell help you track your wardrobe and plan outfits.

Love this piece! Can’t wait to try it. Especially liked the idea of taking out all the accessories. I am sure I have forgotten many of them.

Thank you for the great sale items, keep them coming! Getting that lovely blouse from Nordstrom but in green. Maybe you can put together what colors one should be wearing. You see I was told to stay away from Ruby Reds and wear more Fire Engine Reds. I’m light brown hair, dark brown eyes and olive skin. Would love to know if theres some truth in what colors look best on me!

This is great! Thank you for keeping things real with real life and budgets and lifestyles, etc. I am going to start putting this into practice better. It has been my goal this year to watch what I spend and to spend wiser. This is so helpful, and I love the example you shared above. You look great.

"Push yourself outside your comfort zone and try everything on before dismissing it."

This is so hard, but finally having the mindset to do it. Going back to work next week and going through work clothes to see what fits after almost 2 years. Surprisingly more fit than I expected. After 2 babies and COVID my closet definitely needs some major attention.

Thanks Megan!

ooh...I LOVE "Playing in my closet" as my husband calls it! This is a great step by step and will be super helpful. I'm also starting to realize that for me, having a neat and tidy closet is one of the best forms of self-care. Pedicures are nice, but having an organized closet that makes my heart sing every day is so much better!

Great ideas Megan! We all need someone to help give us "fresh eyes" for new outfits. Your thoughts help us light a creative streak and take care of ourselves in the process. That can help us be the best version of ourselves.

Have you thought about doing a post for teachers/those who work with kids? We want to dress professional, but have to be active and comfortable at the same time. Also have you thought about breaking down outfits into age categories? You can show how the same outfit might change as you travel though different decades. I would love to see your thoughts. Take care and best wishes as you keep moving forward.
